Kid, You'll Shoot Your Eye Out!

Kid You'll Shoot Your Eye Out was a very different experience for me because while I've been in theater for eight years now, I can't say I've SEEN too many shows or monologues. It's different being on stage and it's different sitting in the audience. But I loved the anticipation, and the surprise of watching each actor come to bring me something different. The monologues were interesting, and you could see where each person found their strength in each piece they chose. I personally don't enjoy giving monologues, but I think that I enjoy watching them, and seeing the choices that each person makes as an actor.

Then there was the piece in "act two"; how wonderful it was to see scenes from a play, directed by a student and performed by people I know well. I found the piece to be so powerful. The piece centered around a love triangle where the narrator was in love with the wife and envious of the husband. The wife gets a black eye and the narrator tells a story of anger and domestic abuse, which isn't what happened in real life. then he tells the story that the wife told him. which we also are to assume isn't true. such a powerful piece paired with the outstanding direction made for a very potent experience. I believe that I'll go and watch more theater in the future just to experience being an audience member more, instead of always being the performer on stage.

Sounds Of The Season

The sounds of the season's concert has a different feel when you are someone who actually gets to perform in it. The adrenaline rush is like a cold punch of air on a cold winter day. We work very hard after the fall concert to make sure we learn notes and phrasing and basically we prepare for the unknown. A singer never knows what will happen we just hope that we can convey the message of the songs e choose to sing for the audience. We walked in and sang around the audience, a feat for any choir, and an extra knot in my throat formed. Part of the reason I sing in a choir is because I can blend in and even if people can hear me, they don't always register that it's me singing.

Well the other amazing part of the concert is the simple fact that I'm only in one choir. There are four other ensembles that present pieces for the audience, and audience that when they present includes me. I love hearing the sounds that the A Capella groups present. I love to hear the sounds that the voice can make. It's a sounds that transcends the bounds of the physical for me. I also think that it's amazing to see how into the songs the other groups are. As a singer it's important to show that you are into a song, because if you aren't, the audience won't be. So when the time came to sing Sleigh Ride I threw all caution to the wind and loosed all inhibitions and danced like a fool to show the audience just how fun a sleigh ride with friends and loved ones could be.

I think the best part of any performance is the end because that's when the audience wants to congratulate you and tell you how well you did. The end of the performance is when you know what you did was successful; that all the hard work was worth it, and something you do for fun brought joy to another human being during the holiday season.

Power Point Workshop.!

This power point workshop provided many useful tips on creating power points. I already knew quite a bit about Microsoft power point but I still attended because I felt like you can never know too much. We basically went over techniques and strategies on how to make your power point interesting and catch the audience attention. Never have too many words on your slides because the audience can get bored, and be mindful of your use of certain colors so that they don’t contrast with your background.

Although I knew some good techniques about how to construct a great power point presentation, the workshop was still beneficial for me because I have not created a power point in so long. I have forgotten how to present a presentation without it being to boring. I realized that I do write too much information on one slide, and I need to work on that by writting just two or three bullets and then present the information I know by mouth. I hope that this workshop is offerd next year when I am a sophmore because I will have a lot more presentations to present and I would like to do a great job on them. This workshop helped me and my classmates and was not boring.

abUSed: The Postville Raid

I went to see the experience event which was called abUSed: The Postville Raid. It talked about how immigrants from Guatemala and Mexico are trying to find jobs when they go to Iowa. Most people that this documentary interviewed were under the age of 18, and they talked about how they worked over 12 hours which is legal for people under that age. They also talked about how it hurt the kids both physically and mentally because it put a hardship on their life. They worked all the time to be in pain at the end of the night. The people who paid these kids also paid them for less hours then they had worked.
Most of these immigrants in this documentary were caught and sent back to their home country, but under one condition. Most of them were put in jail and after that they had to wear a GPS tracker on their ankle which they had to charge two hours a day. This made it a little difficult for the people to live out their lives.
Immigrants are treated very poorly, but in my opinion they shouldn't just come here illegally to find work. I understand that they need it, but they should have to go through the same steps as the original immigrants who first came to the United States. They should become a US citizen and I know that takes a long time, but it is also unfair to take away jobs that US citizens need.
Many people don't get a full understanding of immigrants and I feel like this Experience Event is the perfect thing people need if they don't. Immigrants go through harsh times just to help out with their families. From watching this it has given me a different perspective on the immigrant situation.

powerpoint workshop

In this workshop we learned how to use a power point and many different ways so that it can be able to catch the eye of the viewer. The teacher of the workshop went over the little techniques that can be used using Microsoft PowerPoint. Although he was teaching this I felt as if I had learned this a while ago so I had already had a feel on how to work with this software. This would help in the future if I had to do a presentation because it would help to keep the audience interested. This workshop will help me in the future to help keep the audience alive while I am trying to present valuable information to them.
The teacher of this workshop was very funny and kept us entertained with the topic. This workshop did teach me some things, but I really would advise that teachers as well as college students who have not used PowerPoint to go to this workshop. If people already know how to use PowerPoint then they really don't need this workshop.

fish Out of Water

The experience event that I went to was the play called Fish Out of Water. This taught me a lot about the world and how people can affect each others lives. Almost every character was connected with one another. This played showed how the characters changed throughout the play and one that caught my eye the most was daughter. She was in college and trying to do her final dissertation when she realized that becoming a doctor wasn't for her. This play was every funny as well and it taught me to follow my heart and do what I feel like I should do in life.

This experience event was located in the Wachovia Theatre I sat in the front row so I got to have the full experience. In the beginning I play wasn't going to be that good because I was exhausted that night, but as the play went on I found it very interesting and funny. If people were questionable about going to this play if they had another I would encourage them to go. This play was something that can get people thinking about their lives and realize that they need to experience the world and become who they want to be in life.

Sounds of the Season

Today I attended an experience event that was name Sounds of the Seasons. It was a Christmas Concert and I believe the last experience even for the semester. When I arrived there it was really full so I had to sit way in the back. So far back I couldn’t go any further. But it was okay because I could still see the performances and I could still hear them really well too. The choir sung two of my most favorite Christmas songs. One of them was Carol of the Bells and the other one was It’s the most wonderful time of the year. I like the colors they chose to wear together for the guys and girls, which was black and white formal attire. I could tell that the Christmas concert would be a big thing every year, so I am ready to attend the next one next year. They also have some other concerts coming up in March that I am planning on attending. Another awesome thing about the concert was that everything was real. The music that played in the background was not pre recorded or from a CD player, it was played by an actual student or faculty. To me, that is what makes it enjoyable. Going to this concert definitely calmed me down a bit from being so stressful about finals week. I surely needed a break from being so tensed. Towards the end of the concert all of the singers gathered around the audience and sung Silent Night for us. After that we were dismissed from the chapel and were invited for punch and cookies. The concert was really nice, and turned out to be better than what I thought it was.

Kid, You'll Shoot Your Eye Out !

I attended an experiece event at the wachovia theater. It was not exactly a play, but more like a monolouge played by the theater majors and senior theater students. There were 11 people in the show that did a monolouge of their own but there more than 11 monolouges because some students did 2. My favorite monolouge was played by Szalene Anthony. I thought hers was really funny. She pretended by an older women back in the 1900's down south, and the accent she made was hilarious. Another thing I liked about this monolouge production was for the students who more than one act, their second one was always something way different from the first. For example one girl was acting as if she was the prettiest girl ever, and then the next minute she is sad because she cant get a man. I thought that was a really good idea to do because you can then see the students true acting skills. To play a little old quiet lady then 2 minutes later a hyper teenage girl is a really great character. Overall the showcase was really nice, and i look forward to seeing more productions from the theater students and theater majors.!

Final Exam Workshop

In the days counting down the semester, I attended a Final exam workshop. Hosted by the Academic Learning Center with Erin Evans and professors Dr. Fallaballa, Dr. Campbell, and Professor Gaffney. Each professor gave vivid points on what to do and not do for finals. A lot of their information was not to cram the night before a final, reading the test all the way through, and having patience and make sure you understand the questions. Some of the tips they gave were have study groups because most times everyone has similar questions and you will cover most of the material that way. Also having a positive attitude toward taking the test and achieving a good grade. Since each professor came from a different field they each had insight to give from the particular specialty as well as just personal experience. I have become a little more informed about the pros and cons of studying so that I do not get trapped in the hole of not being effective and just wasting studying hours. I highly recommend the workshop for the future because especially for freshman that are new to the college finals process.

Workshop: Finals Preparation

Tonight, I attended a workshop offered to students to educate them on everything from helpful tips for studying for finals to what to expect on finals. This workshop met in the campus center classroom and had an exceptional turn-out.

At this workshop, there were three professors who taught in the English, Biology, and Calculus departments, respectively. Each professor offered tips on how to succeed on finals and what to expect on a typical final. The professors, in general, discussed that finals are meant to evaluate a professor and how well they taught the material to the students. The professors give finals because they want to see whether or not the students understood the material presented to them by the professors. These professors made us realize that professors, for the most part, are not "out to fail us", rather, they want us to understand the material and to succeed. This workshop made me feel more comfortable confronting my professors if I ever had any questions or concerns. The professors at Albright College are very understanding and are here to help students.

One thing that I learned from this workshop is that students should study in advance for finals and not for multiple hours at a time, rather, study for a couple hours and take a break and come back to studying later. Also, it is important to not "pull an all-nighter" the day before a final; in the long-run it is not beneficial. It is important to get a good night's rest the day before the final. I also learned that when a student receives the final, one should take a moment to look over all the questions before starting the actual exam; this helps a student remember the material.

Overall, this was a very helpful workshop. I would attend workshops similar to this one if they were ever offered again. This workshop taught students that we shouldn't be afraid of finals and not to stress about them because with the proper preparation and organization, a student can get a good grade on finals. The most important thing to remember is that the professors here should not intimidate one; they are here to help one learn the material in one's classes.
Tonight, I attended a workshop that was geared towards preparing students for their upcoming final exams. There were three professors from three different departments. One from the Math and Computer department, one from the Biology department, and then one from the English department. All of the professor s gave insight on not only how they construct their finals but also shared their own experiences with final exams with us. They provided us with some helpful tips as well. The most important things that they told us was to get a study group together and plan out a schedule for studying. Cramming all of your studying into one day will not work and pulling an all nighter is a very bad idea. Find a quiet place to study, where you won't get distracted. Staying focued is the key to studying. Walk into the exam with a positive attitude and have a little bit of confidence in yourself. One thing at all of the professors really stressed upon was talking to you professors. If you have a question, just go ask them. Don't be afraid to go and ask a question. Most college students are hesitant about meeting with their professors to ask a question. By the end of the workshop, they wanted you to feel a little bit more comfortable about studying for final exams and also about going to talk to your own professors. If you don't feel comfortable at all with talking to your own professor, then you can get in touch with them and ask them. They were all very nice and helpful. I only have one final this semester and I will use their tips to help me study. If i have a question, I will probably try to get in touch with one of them because my professor is not very helpful.

Final Exam Tip Workshop

On Wednesday December 9th I attended the Final exam Tips from Your Faculty workshop ran by professor Campbell, professor Falabella, professor Gaffney, and professor Greenwood. The propose of this workshop was to help students understand how they should approach their finals. Mainly these professor gave us different types of strategies to how to better our final exam score. The one thing I really took away from this workshop was how they told me to get a good night sleep before my exam. Usually I stay up til about 12 o'clock at night studying before a big test. This workshop has made me realize that I can not do that.

Finals Preparation Workshop.!

Today at the Finals Workshop there were three Proffesors from three different departments and the director of Albright's Academic Learning Center. They gave us useful tips and advice on how to succeed on our finals. Their objective was for every student to walk away feeling comfortable about exams and talking to their professors and faculty. I know for sure after the workshop I was more relaxed about exams than when I walked in their. I though I knew everything about taking exams and how I study better because I had been doing all my life, but I was wrong. There are so many other strategies to studying and studying more in a shorter period of time. Something I had never though of. At the workshop they told us we could save a huge chunck of time studying for two hours of something we dont know, rather than studying for four hours of things I already knew and didn't. I learned that studying in groups is helpful for comparing notes, and also making a study plan in time blocks to know exactly what I am doing at every hour of the day. Some advice the professors gave was not to study ALL day! Even half a day is long Prof. Cambell pointed out, which I thought was not at all. Studying two hours here and two hours there is very benefiacial rather than study 4-6 hours twice a day. A big no no they pointed out was to NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE. Prof. Gaffeney said that if you do that you mines well get a beer and pizza and call it a night! haha. It is very important to get a good nights sleep before finals. One thing I really liked about the workshop was that even though it was for preparing for exams , they even gave us advice for taking the test. For example, read or skim through the whole thing before starting because it can get your brain thinking and ready. Also, going for the ones you know and then do the ones you dont know can give a better chance in getting more questions answered. Good advice they gave was when you see peole leaving after they have finished their test a half hour or more, dont feel presured that you are not as smart as them because 9 times out of 10 they failed for rushing through and not checking their answers. The biggest thing I left with was dont walk in to the room with failure on my mind, walk into the room thinking I am going to past. Be positive and it will geer you up and boost your confidence to do well.! I really enjoyed this workshop.! =)

Final Exam tips from Your faculty

Today I went to the Campus Center Classroom for a workshop at 7. This workshop talked about some tips that could help with taking final exams. Four professors showed up named Campbell, Gaffney, Falabella, and Greenwood. They each took turns to talk about their past with finals and how they applied themselves.
Some tips they gave us was go up to the teacher and ask what's going to be on the test, teachers love it when students show an effort in trying to study for finals. These professors also advised us to break down our study schedule into certain hours. Students should also not leave our studying for the last minute. They also told us to review our test before we actually start taking the exam.
I can really use this workshop and put it to good use for the finals. I am really freaking out over my grades and finals, and this will hopefully help me put the fear aside. I believe this workshop is really useful and other students should go as well.

Finals Preparation

Today I went to the Finals Preparation workshop. It was very useful to listen to. The people who were presenting this workshop were 3 professors from Albright College. They gave very good tips at how to prepare for the finals. For example, they said that when studying one should break their studying sessions into blocks rather than doing it all at once. Another tip was to study in groups rather than study by yourself. They said that it was proven that students who study together do better than students who study by themselves. The tip that all three of these professors stressed was to always ask questions. They said that asking questions can help the student understand better, and it helps the professor to teach better or go over a subject more.
I felt a little relived that some of the questions that I had were answered. It was very informal this session, and I liked it because the students got involved sometimes too. They also encouraged people at this workshop to ask them questions about asking questions. It was very informative. I think that they should do this more often, have workshop that encourage interaction between students and professors.

Robert Quinn and the Scholars at Risk

The experience event I went to was presented by a scholar named Robert Quinn. Quinn is from a program called Scholars at Risk, which helps scholars in other countries when they get into trouble with the law. For example, one scholar from Pakistan had to deal with a threat his son's kidnapping. Scholars at Risk helped relocate him to a country where he can continue his research and reports. I have learned that in foreign countries many scholars are required to send in their reportings to the governement for sensorship. Also many scholars face threats from both government and non-government parties. Some scholars actually get arrested for what their reports are about, or sometimes they might even get assinated.

PowerPoint Workshop

media literature: "The workshop I went to was located in the library's computer lab. The workshop was on the proper ways to use Microsoft PowerPoint. At this workshop he taught the new improvements from PowerPoint 2003 to PowerPoint 2007. Not only did the instructor show use the new advancements and the new features, he also told us different techniques to make good PowerPoint presentations. One thing I took away from this workshop was how to only use 6 sentences of six words or less, or four sentences with ten words or less. I will keep this in mind the next time i need to make a PowerPoint. I am sure I am going to use this some point in my career."

Facul-Tea: The Book of Ruth

This was a very interesting experience event. This event was mostly about the biblical story of Ruth and Naomi. Naomi, her husband, and her two sons left bethlehem because of a harsh famine had hit her village. So they had to migrate to the Mo-op village nearby. Then Naomi had her two sons marry Mo-op women named Oprah and Ruth. Then ten years later all three men died, so they went back to Bethlehem. To make a long story short Ruth had a baby with her dead husbands cousin to give to Naomi.

"Kid, You'll Shoot Your Eye Out!" Experience Event

Tonight I attended the experience event called "Kid You'll Shoot Your Eye Out!" This experience event was definitely not what I expected it to be. Faculty and staff portrayed this event as relating to the holiday season but it turns out that it really did not. A majority of the event related to the students acting out monologues from certain movies and it turned out to be very entertaining.

The students involved in the show came from the class THR 250 and THR 491: Senior Seminar, meaning they are pursuing a career in the theater department. Many of these actors and actress's were very talented and played their roles amazing. Each one of the 11 actors/actress' each recited a scene from a well known movie. For example one of the monologues came from the movie clueless. However some of the movies I was unfamiliar with. I feel like they should have rein-acted more famous movies because a lot of the audience was confused. Like I said in the beginning it did not really relate to the holiday season, but at one point they had the actors talk about a holiday experience.

Overall it was great seeing some of the actors and actress' here at Albright. All of them are so talented and I'm sure it takes months for them to get everything perfect. I give them a lot of credit because i know it takes a lot of hard work.

Filmmaker

The first experience event that I went to here at Albright, was the filmmakers event that featured Jem Cohen. I expected it to be like the typical Hollywood films, but instead it was something completely different. The films were documentaries and they captured the images and realities of everyday life.

My favorite film was called One Bright Day,which involved a guy talking about his life in the US military. He talked about what he had experienced and then I could see what his life had become as he was showed sleeping in the streets in New York. I was able to see how real his situation was and it made me feel sad to see how some people actually have to live. I think these films are interesting because I am not used to watching real people and their lives on TV. Instead, I am used to watching all of the movies that always seem to have some sort of happy ending and aren't actually the realities of most people. But for some of these people in the film, I don't know if things will ever get better for them. When watching real life films, I never know what is going to happen next. This is what makes them so interesting to watch.

During this same film, I noticed all of the advertising in the background. I don't think that Jem meant to include this in his film, it just happened to be where the guy was located at. I couldn't help but notice the signs because I thought of media literacy class when we talked about advertising. Advertising plays a huge role in our lives. I think this is proved because the film is about everyday life and since advertising is included in that it can be true.

Overall, I found my first experience to be very interesting. Now I will not only think of films as just being Hollywood movies, but I will also think about other types such as documentaries. Usually when I go to the movies, I know what to expect. I at least know a little bit about the plot and could probably guess the ending. But when I viewed the documentary films, I didn't know what to expect because anything could have happened because it showed people's real life.

Abused:The Postville Raid

The biggest Immigration Customs Enforcement raid in the U.S. took place in Postville, Iowa. People from Guatemala migrated there so that they could find work. I found this documentary to very interesting because we were able to see the point of view of both the people in Guatemala and the immigrants in the U.S. And then because of this, we are able to understand why they migrate to the U.S.

The people of Guatemala couldn't find jobs in their country and so when they heard about all the jobs in the U.S, they decided to come. After watching the film, I am able to understand this better. I think that if they are coming to the U.S. for work, then that it should be okay. If we want them to be legalized, then the process should become easier because these people from other countries need the jobs now so that they can feed their families. They don't have the time to wait.

I thought it was wrong how kids from Guatemala were working 12 hour days in the U.S. and sometimes wouldn't even get paid for all the hours that they worked. Also, some of the kids weren't even allowed to eat, drink, or use the bathroom during the time that they were there. The kids should be in school instead of working to support their families. They should be able to live a life like a normal kid and not have to take on the responsibility of providing money for their family at such a young age.

I think children shouldn't have to suffer through these conditions. From the film, I was able to see the poverty that exists in Guatemala. These kids have to grow up there and live with very little. They need the appropriate food to nourish their bodies and they are unable to get this when they are living in these terrible conditions. I think if the U.S. would make migration easier for people of other countries, then immigration wouldn't be such a big issue.

Overall, I think that even though, this raid most likely occurred so that they could set an example, people are still going to migrate here. People still need work and they don't care what the consequences are, they have to provide for their families and the only way they can do this is to find a job.

Revisioning Papers

The Revision Papers Workshop was run by the Writing Center. They discussed all the different techniques of how to revise a paper. They talked about how you can edit your paper through global revision or local revision. Global revision is looking at your paper as a whole and trying to find the big picture of your paper. Local revision is when you narrow your revision down to a specific point.

They also talked about the Composition pyramid, which shows all of the areas that we should focus on when revising papers. I found this to be very interesting because I was able to see what the most important part of a paper should be and what I should focus on. Voice, focus, purpose, and the audience are the most important rather than the grammar and mechanics. I never thought of revision as a pyramid and this allowed me to see it in a different way.

Overall, I found the Revising Papers Workshop to be very useful because I learned that there are many different techniques that can be used in order to edit a paper. And by attending this workshop, I think I will be able to improve my revision skills.

Catching your Z's and Stress

The skills workshop, Catching Z's and stress, was run by Erin Evans, Alex Lesko and Dr. Santoro. They are with the Gable Health and counseling center and each of them discussed a different topic.

First Dr. Santoro talked about sleep and the affects it can have on us. He said that we need sleep in order to have a good memory. He gave us tips on how we should study. I found this very interesting because he said that we should have an adequate amount of sleep before studying and after studying. He also told us that if we are having problems with falling asleep or getting the proper amount, then we should set a pattern so that our brain can get used to it. This was very helpful to me because I have this problem. I can never fall asleep, he suggested that the cause for this could because that people often eat, watch TV, or study in bed, where we are only supposed to sleep. This helped me to realize that I have to break this habit and start a new and improved sleeping habit.

Alex talked about stress and the four categories of the signs and symptoms , which are physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral. He talked about how we can recognize our signs of stress and then how we can take steps to manage it. He gave us some tips on how we can manage our stress, such as eating a well-balanced diet, getting plenty of sleep, and managing your time. I thought this was interesting because I have not realized all of the different signs and symptoms that are caused by stress. I learned that although stress never goes away, there are many ways that we can manage our stress.

Erin talked about test anxiety and the causes of it. She said that it is very common among college students for many reasons. Students are afraid to fail an exam because they have the fear of being alienated from their parents, family, and friends. She gave us a really good tip for when we are stressed out whether it would be during a test or something else. She said that just breathing could help a lot because it helps us to relax and to calm down. She also suggested that we should find out about the format of the exam that we are taking, so that we can be better prepared and become less stressed.

Overall, I found this workshop to be very helpful to me because they discussed many on the things that I am having a problem with. And this made me realize that I am not the only one going through this because everyone else is, bu they might be dealing with it in a different way. Also, it helped me to become less stressed about my Economics exam this week that I have been stressing about. Therefore, I think this workshop was really beneficial to me and my peers.

Powerpoint Workshop

On Thursday November 19, 2009 I went to the PowerPoint Workshop in the library. I was actually surprised with all the stuff I already knew. In the past I have never taken any classes on how to use PowerPoint but, throughout high school I was able to use and learn this program. Since I had used this program before it was easy for me to understand what was being taught. I did not really learn much because of this but it was interesting seeing the older generation get excited over this program. Being in that class and observing everyone made me realize that the older generation is not as familiar with this program as much as the younger generation is. The instructor said that there was going to be an advanced class so I most likely will go to that one so I am able learn more about this program. I had fun creating my own slides though. I don't think there was enough time given in order for this program to be taught.

Facul-tea Presentation

This afternoon, I attended the Facul-tea Presentation in the Library study room.  I found this experience event to be unique from others I have attended because of the information that was explored.  The speaker, Professor Jennifer Koosed, is an author and biblical expert who presented her paper titled Bread and Barely in the Book of Ruth.  This paper discussed the theme of food and the metaphorical role it plays throughout the book of Ruth in the Bible.

Particularly, her conclusion about the involvement of food in the story suggested that food has a direct relationship with fertility.  If you are familiar with the book of Ruth, you know that the main character Ruth spends the night with a man named Boas who ultimately fertilizes her.  But as a metaphoric representation, he sends Ruth home the next morning with her apron full of grain, ultimately representing the idea of impregnating her.

Also suggested by Jennifer's paper, bread is represented as a "primary food" throughout the story.  To the people of Bethlehem, food is bread, and bread is life.  The town name Bethlehem even supports this statement in its derogative origin with "Beth" meaning "house of" and "lahem" meaning "bread or food".

Finally, the type of grain that Ruth gleans says much about her social status in the story.  Because she uses the grain of barley, it is apparent that Ruth lives in poverty.  This is because of all grains, barley is the least white, fluffy, and soft and thought of as inferior to wheat.  The use of barley grains indicates Ruth's cultural identity as a lower-class citizen.

Relative to media, I found that the information in this event had a lot in common with themes we've been studying in class. The idea of representation of a cultural identity through literature is ultimately a form of media.  Also, the metaphorical theme of food in place of fertility is another method of using representation in media.  This can be compared to our studies of race and representation of stereotypes through media.

Overall, I found the information that Professor Koosed's presented as interesting and thought-provoking.  The only suggestion I would make would be to present the information with visuals and other manners of teaching because I found myself zoning out often.  Other than that though I thought this event was unique, not to mention I enjoyed having refreshments after all the talk about food.

Experience Event: Sybil

On Wednesday November 18, I attended an experience event, presented by Psi Chi, in which they showed the film Sybil. This movie was made in 1976 and is based off a true story about a woman that suffers from dissociative identity disorder. The reasoning behind this disorder was that the main character, Sybil, suffered from psychological trauma from when she was a child. The film shows how one psychiatrist helps her remember what happened to her when she was little and to battle this disorder. The film also documents the different "personalities" that Sybil suffers from.

Because this film was originally a television series, the film was over two hours long. However, during the whole movie, the students were able to learn about Sybil and her disorder. I felt as if I was learning about her disorder as the character was. In the end, all of her "identities" come out and it is said that Sybil is now in peace. After the movie, the Psychology Honor Society, Psi Chi, held a discussion session about the movie. Here, the students discussed whether or not dissociative identity disorder is or is it just made up. The students were also able to discuss the symptoms and how this disorder is caused.

It was very interesting hearing Psi Chi talk about this disorder because I am not a psychology major. I thought this was a great experience event because it taught me about a very important disorder that is caused by childhood trauma. Although this experience event was around two and half hours long, it was worth it.

Academic Workshop: PowerPoint Presentation

Yesterday I attended a workshop offered by the library. The instructor taught the students about the new PowerPoint 2007. We learned everything from the different themes of a presentation to the animations that can be used during a presentation. Attending this workshop taught me about the new features that is offered in the new 2007 version rather than the 2003 version. The instructor's workshop was easy to follow and he took the time to help the students learn about the program.

What I found most interesting was that not only did we learn about the features of PowerPoint, but also different techniques when giving a PowerPoint presentation. He told us that white backgrounds or light colored backgrounds keep the audience focused and it is easy to read; rather than dark backgrounds such as black. Also, the students were taught that when making a presentation, one shouldn't add too much information; it would be overwhelming to the audience. The bullets on each slide are there for a student to add key points that will be covered in the presentation and the Notes section, which appears at the bottom of the screen is used for a speaker to remember what he or she is going to be talking about. Here, the speaker can put as much information needed for the presentation without having it appear in the presentation.

I think that this workshop is great for college students to attend because it will help students with better, more professional presentations. The instructor was very understanding and provided useful tips to having a great presentation. Overall, it was a very beneficial workshop.

Academic Workshop: PowerPoint Presentation.

Yesterday I attended an Academic workshop that went over how to make a good power-point presentation. I was unfamilar with making power points but this workshop was very beneficial. However, I do not own a PC so i would be unable to make a power-point presentation like this because it is a little bit different on a Mac. The workshop was very basic and gave me a better understanding about how to work with the Microsoft PowerPoint program.

The instructor gave us tips on how to make our power-point presentations look formal but at the same time appealing to our audience. We started off by creating different slides describing ourselves. We learned the basics like how to incorporate clip arts into each slide and how we can make the pictures look 3-Dimensional. Then we worked on how to set up the layout and what colors and designs look appropriate. One thing I learned is to never make a dark background because it makes it harder for the audience to see what is written. You want to keep your presentations as clear and precise as possible. We learned how to change fonts, styles, colors, bullet points, etc, in order to design a good presentation. Since this workshop was only an hour long i got a general understanding of how to work the program.

After the workshop was over i felt like it was very beneficial especially if I need to make a power point presentation in one of my classes. He said there was another workshop with more detail about the program ,which i might attend too.

The Broadway Trip

This past weekend, i went on the broadway trip experience event. We had the option of going to see Hair or West Side Story.
i chose to go to west side story. i thought that the play was really good. i really like broadway plays but i've only been to three including this one, even though i live in new york. It was a long day. We had to catch an 8am bus into the city. When we got there, we were able to walk around for a couple of hours. My friends and i grabbed lunch. None of my friends were from new york so i took them to Rockefeller Center for lunch. Then we went to the NBC store, saw the christmas tree (it was only being put up) and the ice rink. We walked around a bit, went to a few small stores, and shopped at the street fairs.
We had to be at the Palace Theatre at 1:3o for a 2:00 show. We were seated at the very top. I've only seen part of the movie, so seeing the play was awesome! I really enjoyed it. After the show we got a few more hours to walk around. My parents and my friend that goes to college in the city met my friends after. We walked around times square and went out to dinner. We went to the M&M store, the hershey store, and the MTV store. My friends from Albright had to be back to the bus by 7:30. I stayed in the city with my parents for a few more hours until they had to go home. I stayed at my friend's dorm and took a bus back the next day.
All in all, it was a great day. i really enjoyed this experience event and i will definitely be attending one if they have it next semester.

How To Choose Your Concentration

Yesterday i attended the workshop called 'how to choose your concentration.' I am an alpha major so i felt that this workshop really helped.
There were only four other people there so i thought that this workshop was very helpful. We were able to talk directly to the instructor about the majors we were considering and what our fears were. i personally have been very nervous about being undecided. I have been considering music business but i had no idea what i could possibly do as a profession after graduation. the instructor emailed me already with a contact person who graduated from Albright, interned at Atlantic records, and now works there. i emailed him today and he has already given me hints, tips, and suggestions. I feel more comfortable about my future already!
I also was able to make a personal appointment with one of the people in the career development center for friday to talk more specifically about the music business program. We were given sheets that talked about our interests to help us narrow down our fields of interest.
I knew that the career development center existed, however, i never thought to use it. This workshop really helped me and i feel more confident about my future already. I would recommend this workshop to everyone if it is offered again. If it isn't, people should really contact the career development center for directional help.

Catching Your Z's and Stress: Making it Work for You

Last night I attended the skills development workshop based on the importance of sleep and  methods of dealing with text anxiety.  A doctor from the Gable Health Center opened the workshop with a discussion about why sleep is so important.  Some of the things that sleep affects includes your memory, behavior, nervous & immune system, growth, and your mood.  Obviously, these things are essential to function throughout the day, which is why it is sleep is a significant factor in one's daily routine. As college students, we should be getting 7-9 hours of sleep daily in order to feel fully rejuvenated for the following day.  This will help with test performances and anxiety issues as well.
Speaking of tests, one major thing I learned from the workshop involved the harm in pulling all-nighters.  They are not recommended because they work against you.  If you have a big test and decide to stay up all night studying, you are going to do worse than if you sleep for a few hours.  This is because your memory shuts down when it is deprived of sleep.  In fact, sleep is where we form our memories, so it is clear as to why pulling an all-nighter would actually hurt you.  Also, if you consume any caffeine while studying, it is recommended to consume caffeine when you take your test the next morning.  The reason being involves the way our brain stores and accesses memories.  It is easiest to access certain memories when we are under the same conditions as we were when they were made.

Finally, another doctor from the counseling center steered the topic towards dealing with stress and anxiety.  Like the first doctor, this doctor also suggested that sleep is an important part of keeping yourself healthy mentally.  He also stressed that exercising is one of, or if not the best way to relieve stress.  But the most important thing to do is to start becoming aware of stress in our lives.  Something as simple as a stomach ache can be an effect of stress, which is why it gets so overlooked.  Identifying stress is ultimately the only way we can begin to heal it.

In conclusion, I thought this workshop was beneficial, especially with final exams coming up in the near future.  I learned insightful information about sleep and anxiety, and will definitely be applying it in my own life, especially the tips about sleep.  Out of all the workshops I attended, this one, to me, was the most interesting and helpful in taking what I have learned and applying it to my own life.

Academic Workshop: Catching your Z's and Stress

Today, I attended an Academic workshop called catching your Z's and stress. I learned about the importance of sleep and how it coordinates all body functions. There are a bunch of reasons why we sleep. It helps with our memory and learning, social behaviors, growth development, immune system and mood enhancements.

We form our memories when we are sleeping. I learned that if you drink coffee while studying for a test the night before, chances are if you drink coffee again during the test you will do better. This was scientifically proven through a case study with college students. When we sleep there are certain stages that allow our memories to be processed. There are 4 stages of sleep. These include, Stage 1 where you begin to get drowsy, Stage 2 which is a light sleep, Stage 3 & 4 is when you are in a deep sleep, and REM Sleep is our deep sleep where we form our dreams. They say that you should sleep right before you study and also right after you are done studying this way your brain processes the information. Most teenagers and college students should have 7-9 hours of sleep each night.

We also learned about Insomnia and how there are different levels. One popular level of Insomnia is the one where people having trouble falling asleep. They say if this happens you should get out of bed and read a book, or even take a walk. Stress is another main concern for college students. There are different symptoms in different categories such as Physical, Emotional, Cognitive, and Behavioral. Test anxiety is another big factor and they say that some people are born with it.

After attending this workshop, I now have a better understanding about the importance of sleep and how we can overcome stress and anxiety. This workshop was very useful and self explanatory. I feel like most college students, especially if they are overwhelmed, should attend this workshop because it is a great way to have a better understanding about the importance of sleep and how to overcome stress.

Experience Event; The Fall Pops Concert

On October 10, 2009 I attended the Pops Concert in the Chapel. In high school I used to be in chorus so it was fun being able to see the concert from a different perspective. The songs that were chosen were very fun and upbeat. I enjoyed watched the chorus members dance while singing the different songs. I liked that there was a variety of different groups. My favorite song was the Bohemian Rhapsody. Many of the songs that were chosen I sang in my previous years in chorus so I was able to sing along in the back, and I enjoyed that a lot.

Experience Event; Fish Out of Water

On Thursday October 1, 2009 I saw the play fish out of water. This was a writing play by Jeffrey Lentz and Cocol Bernal. This play was very creative and I enjoyed every second of it. The actors and actresses played their roles very well. They all had an understanding of who their characters were and were able to portray them to the audience. The play was also extremely funny I was always laughing at the jokes being made.

Revising Workshop

I recently attended the writing workshop held by the writing center. It was interesting and gave a lot of good information. Several handouts were given out to understand the topic a little further. For a workshop there were a few bit people that attended. I had quite a bit of feedback and understood the point they were giving. I think the workshop could have ran a little longer, because the actually revising part did not get to be displayed. I would attend more like because it was a great interest to me.

Revising Papers Workshop

Last night I attended the Revising Papers Workshop sponsored by the writing center.  I was actually optimistic about going because I thought it might benefit me in writing papers.  But what I found was that for the most part, it reinforced the things I already know (which is not necessarily a bad thing, but can be boring).  To begin, the opening discussion involved the difference between revising and editing... two actions that people commonly confuse.  Revising is the process of reading, examining, and thinking about the approach, technique, and organization of a paper, rather than editing which involves the correction of grammar and mechanics.  One thing the workshop stressed was that in writing papers, revising is equal to or more important than editing.  Of course it is important to be aware of both, but you want to have a clear approach and focus more than anything else so that your paper is not all over the place.  One way to do this is to ask yourself a few questions such as:

1.  What is the Purpose of the paper?
2.  Is there an effective introductory paragraph?
3.  Is the thesis clearly defined?
4.  Are the arguments presents supporting the thesis?
5.  Is the overall organization clear?
6.  Is the subject coherence?

Though these are questions that usually happen automatically in the process or writing, it is good to be aware of them and to make sure you are able to answer them clearly.  They will give your papers a better direction.

Overall the workshop was alright, but I felt it could have been more informative.  Maybe if examples were shown about how to correct actual essays or common errors that people make, I could have gotten more out of it.  One thing I did learn though was to take advantage of my professor's office hours when I am having trouble writing a paper.  I never thought of doing so before, but its something I will consider in the future, rather trying to figure it out on my own.

Revising Papers

Tonight, I attended the skills development workshop for revising papers. This workshop was held by the Writing Center. Ms. Liberatore was the workshop leader, and she was accompanied by a student that works at the Writing Center, Sarah. The two of them were very interactive with all of the students at attended. They used a slide show to go through the process of revising papers and even had a handout of the entire slide show. The workshop took about an hour and they didn't even get to go touch upon everything that they wanted. They had other handouts to give us through out the workshop. I would say that the handouts and the workshop in general was helpful. The tips for revising papers. for me, were more helpful then the workshop in itself.

They talked about the Writing Center and how they revise papers. Revising in different from editing. When you edit a paper, you check for grammatical errors and keep the same form of the paper. Revising an essay is trying to look at the essay in a different way. You pay attention to the focus and form of the paper. Grammar is important, but not the making or breaking point for an essay. Making sure that your thesis matches up with all of the points throughout your paper. Rereading your essay over and over again will help you to notice the mistakes that you have made. Reading your essay out loud to yourself, or even to a friend, was another good tip that they gave us. Overall, the workshop was helpful. They want to hold another one in the spring and i plan on attending that one as well.

The Family Show

Today I attended "The Family Show" by Jennifer and Kevin McCoy. This was an introduction to their art exhibit which is showing at the Freedman Gallery. Their art was a combination of sculptures and videos. I was very interesting, but it was very weird as well. My favorite part of the show was when they showed segments of their video "I'll Replace You" This was a video in which Jennifer and Kevin McCoy casted different actors to play versions of themselves in their daily lives. The one segments they showed us was when the actors played the McCoys as artist.
It was very funny because the actors acted brilliantly, but they had no idea what they were talking about. The actors were not given a script at all. It was pure stand up. I feel that the film being unscripted was what made it funny.

There were a few films though that bored me. The first film that they showed was segments of the show Starsky and Hutch, and how each segment was grouped together. For example, there were films of every close up, every car chase, every prostitute, etc. I felt that they had way too much time on their hand to go through that. I know I would go crazy if I did that.

Even tough there were some boring parts through out the show, it was still kind of cool to see some of their sculptures and pictures. I liked the idea that they were going for.

Nathalie Handal

Tonight, I attended the poetry reading by Nathalie Handal. I was a bit skeptical going into it because I was not sure if I was going to enjoy it or not. I was never exposed to a true poetry reading. I have only seen videos. I also find it hard to connect with poetry at times. By the end of it, I was mesmerized. Having a poet read their own poetry is so beautiful. I could connect with what she was saying, and even if I didn't completely understand the poem, she would explain it afterwords. There were times when she would be talking about her own life ans why she wrote a particular poem and I felt as though she was talking directly to me. Poetry is one thing on paper, but another when someone is speaking it to you.

Nathalie Handal is an amazing women. Her stories are fascinating and shes very open when it comes to her poetry. She speaks not really having a home, but finding comfort and solitude in poetry. She writes to remember. She spoke of how she has a bad memory and many times cant even realize that someone is quoting one of her own pieces of work. She needs to write things down to avoid forgetting them. She notices the beauties of the world but never forgets the burdens. I understand where she is coming from. when she was discussing this, I was able to connect with her so much more. She doesn't just talk to you, she speaks to you. Her poetry and what she would talk about made me reflect on my own life.

It was my first ever poetry reading and I left very pleased. I love walking away from something tat leaves you thinking and Nathalie Handal has that affect on you. I was honored to be able to listen to her, and for her to share her story. She is an inspirational writer and it was a wonderful experince.

A couple of weeks ago i attended the experience event called "Postville Raid." This experience event dealt with the treatment of immigrants. This past year in Postville Iowa, immigrants where sent back to their home or they had to work in factories under poor and dangerous conditions. Luis Argueta directed and filmed this short video clip, and after watching it I could not believe that the mistreatment of immigrants still exists today.

A majority of these immigrants where from Guatemala. They came to America to seek a better life and more opportunities. Back in their own countries it was pretty tough for them to support their families with the jobs they had. Once they got here they had a better chance of supporting their families even though they worked in these factories receiving very little pay. The conditions in these factories were awful and a lot of younger children had to do this strenuous work too. Some parents would have to go back to their own country and leave their children behind here in the United States in hopes of them suceeding in their life. That has got to be one of the hardest things for a parent to do. The treatment of these immigrants was just appalling.

Luis Argueta shows a bunch of different immigrants and how they were reacting to the way they were being treated. A lot of them were upset, and crying, while others broke out into pure outrage. According to the United States everyone is to be treated equally , but do immigrants have equal and human rights as Americans do? One thing I can agree with is that immigrants should come here legally, then it would be perfectly acceptable. But even if they do not they should not be abused and treated unfairly.

The United States is said to be a free nation and everyone is entiled to human rights. After attending this experience event it made me realize how not everyone is entitled to these rights. It is also kind of an embarrassment to the United States and how we treat people of other races and cultures when they come into the country. The treatment of these immigrants was shocking. The United States has to come up with some agreement to solve these immigrant issues.

abUSed: The Postville Raid

On October 14th, I attended an experience event that discussed the current problems of immigration. Filmmaker, Luis Argueta came to talk about the raids in the United States involving immigrants. He showed us his documentary that featured the town of Postville and the people that lived there. He interviewed many families and people that were affected by this raid. Ultimately, this documentary and presentation is about how we should be questioning human rights and the treatment of others, especially immigrants.

This presentation made me think about what immigrants go through just to provide for their families and mostly, to survive. They come to the United States looking for success and happiness that the United States claims to have. I think that it is unfair the way the government handles the situation dealing with the immigrants.

What I found most shocking to me were the conditions in which some of the illegal immigrants had to work in. A lot of them worked in factories receiving little to no pay and forced to work long hours. It was especially hard for women because some were even raped. Children were also forced to work in these factories. The people that ran these factories would overlook the fact that some of the immigrants were young, children.

This documentary forces one to think about whether or not the way the government handles the issue of illegal immigrants fairly. I think that it is unfair the way the government treats illegal immigrants. I think that something should be done to try and help some of these immigrants. Because ultimately they are looking for a new beginning and a better opportunity in the United States. Many immigrants have jobs that people who live in the United States wouldn't normally want to have.

Overall, I thought this presentation was very interesting. Luis Argueta did an excellent job documenting real people who told their side of the story. This film will hopefully show the viewers that there is another view point to the immigration issue.

abUSed: The Postville Raid

Last week I attended the "
abUSed: The Postville Raid"
experience event.  It involved a film directed by Luis
Argueta which documented an immigration raid that
took place in Postville, Iowa this past year. There,
police authorities captured hundreds of illegal
immigrants working in a factory, most of which were
of Guatemalan decent. As a result, these people were
either sent back to their country or forced to remain
in the US and wear a GPS device around their ankle
that could not be removed.

It was absolutely devastating to hear the immigrants'
reaction towards the raid. While many may believe
justice was served by the raid, it certainly was not.
Many of the immigrants that got caught were
interviewed in the film, and revealed the horrible
situations that they were in. Even while working at
the factory, the immigrants were treated in horrendous
ways whether due to the dangerous conditions,
extremely long hours, little or no pay, or their age.
Some of the immigrants were no older than fourteen!
Not to mention, when they were caught, many of the
family members were separated and till this day have
not been able to see their loved ones.

This film lead me to think about my view towards
immigrants. I was so appalled to see how these
victims were treated when ultimately, they were just
trying to make a better life for their families and
themselves. In some situations parents were able to
leave their children behind if they were born in the
US, in hopes that maybe their children would have a
better life. I cannot begin to imagine how hard that
must have been. One thing I found interesting was the
fact that there are only a few thousand visas available
for immigrants worldwide to work in the US. I was so
surprised because in my opinion, that definitely does
provide enough opportunity for the rest of world.
Unless we do something to increase jobs in other
countries, I think America should rethink their
immigration laws and solve this problem, because
something needs to be done.

abUSed: The Postville Raid

Tonight I went to the abUSed: The Postville Raid by Luis Argueta, and I was amazed by how affected I was. The subject was about immigration and how on 2008 over 100 illegal immigrants in Postville Iowa were captured and sent back to either Mexico and Guatemala.
Many of these illegal immigrants came for a better life, than what they had in their country. The documentary included interviews from actual victims of the raid. Women, men, children, and teenagers were all affected by the raid. Many parents were separated from their children, and some children, even if they were US citizens, went back to their parents countries. Those children suffered because in Guatemala there are no jobs, and this means the parents could not afford to buy food.
I was very inspired by this film. I know the some of the reasons immigrants come here, because my parents were also immigrants too. They are legal, but it was a long journey to get here. They had to fill out many papers, and go through racial boundaries.
The director, Luis Argueta, had some good point when he was discussing the film afterward. He asked us "Why do you think people come here and suffer"? In response to that, I think that people come here for a better life. They want their children to have a better life too. The reason many of these people come illegally is because getting a visa requires time, and money. Sometimes people are denied visas.
This presentation was very good. I actually want to see the rest of the film when it is done.

choral concert

On October 10th I attended the "Pops" concert which consisted of the several choirs at Albright. Each being concert choir, Albright angels, mane men, and woman's ensemble. Each had its own unique sound and being that I am an experienced vocalist I listen very carefully to different things that not everyone else might listen too. In all I thought it was a very brief concert much shorter than anyone that I have performed before. I liked the selection of music and will be attending more in the future for experience credit as well I love the culture of music. Also after attending I got the program to make me aware of the band and string concerts that are upcoming. I think Albright has a good program here in Fine Arts department and only can get even than they already are.

Darwin Lecture

On October 1st, I attended the experience event: Darwin and the Split between Natural and Sexual Selection; with the guest speaker, Dr. Elizabeth Grosz. It was held in the Klein Lecture Hall, not only did it reach its maximum capacity but it more then exceeded it. I was forced to stand in the back of the lecture hall without a seat. Not only was I forced to stand uncomfortably against a wall, the mic was not operating properly. I had to stand for an hour and listen to muffled sounds because Dr. Grosz was extremely soft spoken and throughout the entire speech, I could not make out a word. I was not the only irritated person in the room. The group of students surrounding me were frustrated as well, and actually wound up leaving before the lecture was over.

Dr. Grosz seemed to be very educated in the area that she was discussing. Although I could not hear everything that she was saying, I could make out some of it. I was able to acknowledge that she would spend a lot of time elaborating on a specific topic. I am sure that the lecture was very interesting since people asked a lot of questions during the open discussion session. Everybody that asked questions were in the front of the hall and were educators of some sort. Generally, the students seemed uninterested in the topic at hand. I wish that I would have been able to hear because it really was something that I was interested in.

acre presentation

Recently I attended the acre presentation, which involve scientific studies on a certain area of interest. Not all the studies were science based though one was about the FACES that Dr. Pankratz does here at Albright. A couple of years ago a student and Dr. Pankratz decide since they were at school over the summer and there was not many people in school to journey into reading a see those faces. In addition to having all of those faces there was poetry that went along people gave brief statements about their view of Reading then and now and the student composed a very good collage of all the statements and I was fascinated of how it turned out. I found that the most interesting, because the rest were heavily scientific. For example had research on finding cyclodextrin which is to the best of my interpretation the vitamin k trying to escape from the water. Another was the acid base reaction and oxidation-reduction and seeing the reactant to this atom; which were aminium ions and pyridine. Another presenter was a theory of a type of cruelty toward animals and how there were cultural difference in different places that were explored. In my personal opinion I liked the second wave of presenters. I the program ran for about two and half hours and there was a slight intermission and then the continuation of the program. There was definitely a more of attention grabber in all presenters after the intermission. In all I did like the program I would try to attend the following one 10-8, but if gives a lot of information lot you may not experience in the classroom or other places. I was also after seeing the presentation more interested conducting my own research/acre project.

Time Mangement!

So today at Albright College we had a Time Management program around 7. It was very informative, but a little boring at some parts. It started off good. The speaker, April, was very fun and peppy. It made the speech more enjoyable.

I learned a lot on how to manage my time very well. She said that many students like to procrastinate during college. I as a freshmen I found that true too.I noticed that I have not been studying or working on my papers as I should have. In this program the speaker said that it is natural for students to not want to do their work, and that they will use every excuse in the book to try to avoid work. This program was about not using these excuses to not do work. I learned a lot of tips to share. For starters, saying "Hmm, I think I will take a shower...hmm I am hungry is really just a way not to do your work. People need to put a schedule for themselves that will help them do good. For example, April said that it is okay to have fun, or hang out. The only thing is that you cannot let having fun interfere with your schoolwork.

This program was very useful, because in the end we all received time management sheets. With time slots for all your classes, and in between. I know that I will fill mine out, and try to stick to it as much as I can.

FYS100: Media Literacy

First year students blog about Experience Events and Skills Development.
